On this day, November 10, 1878, William Waud died in New York. Born in England and trained as an architect, Waud came to America and began working for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper as a staff illustrator. In 1864 Waud went to work for Harper’s. Many of his field sketches done during the Civil are in the collection of The Library of Congress.
