On this day, July 1, 1858, illustrator Alice Barber Stephens was born in Salem, NJ. Stephens. She studied art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, at Drexel Institute with Howard Pyle, in Paris at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi. During her 50 year career, Stephens illustrations appears in many of the major magazines and a wide variety of books.
