On this day, August 5, 1875, comic artist Clare A. Briggs was born in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Briggs studied art while at the University of Nebraska for two years. Briggs first published drawings appeared in the Western Penman. Eventually Briggs worked as a newspaper sketch artist and then as an editorial cartoonist. His first daily continuity comic strip was called “A Piker Clerk.”
