On this day, September 5, 1875, illustrator William J. Aylward was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A student of Howard Pyle, Aylward was one of the eight artists and illustrators chosen to serve as offical war artists for the army in World War I to record the war effort and scenes of battle. Aylward was also a master of illustrating seafaring scenes.
