On this day, June 18, 1949, author and illustrator Chris van Allsburg was born in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. After studying art at the University of Michigan and at RISD, Van Allsburg began working as a sculptor. He began illustrating and writing after his wife showed his pictures to a children’s book editor. Not only does Van Allsburg produce his own books, he has also done illustrations for the work of others. Two of his books, Jumanji and The Polar Express have received Caldecott Medals.

Norman Rockwell Museum is Open 7 days a week year-round

May – October and holidays:

open daily: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Thursdays: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. (July/August 2015)
Rockwell’s Studio open May through October.

November – April: open daily:

Weekdays: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Weekends and holidays: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Holiday Closings:

The Museum is Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day
