On this day, February 24, 1836, illustrator and artist Winslow Homer was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Homer began working as an illustrator in the late 1859s after his apprenticeship to a Boston lithographer. Homer illustrated both images of everyday life and scenes of troops, battles, and revelry of the armies of the American Civil War. After the war Homer began to devote his efforts to painting.
