On this day, February 22, 1925, writer and illustrator Edward Gorey was born in Chicago, Illinois. While he did study art for one semester at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Gorey’s formal art training was minimal. His early work was for the art department at Doubleday where he illustrated book covers. By 1953, Gorey was creating his own work some published under pen names in his distinctive style.
