On this day, August 7, 1885, illustrator and lyric composer Gene Buck was born in Detroit, Michigan. Trained at the Detroit Art Academy, Buck became renown for his sheet music cover illustrations. While Walter Winchell was on vacation in August of 1942, illustrator Dean Cornwell wrote  fill in copy, saying “Gene Buck was the first artist I ever copied.”
